Buying in Bulk
To save money on groceries, a lot of people decide to buy in bulk, use some, and put the leftovers in their freezer. So, how is this going to help you save money or not help you save money?
When you buy in bulk, the price per unit is relatively cheaper. This is obvious since retailers always want to sell more so when you buy in large quantities, the price will be lower. Next, if you are a simple person who does not need to rotate their food too often in a week or month, then buying in bulk will save you a lot of money. For instance, I love salmon, so I often buy half a salmon instead of just one or two pieces every day. When I buy a large amount of salmon, I have already had a plan in mind about what dishes I will cook. This way, I can make sure that I do not need to freeze leftover salmon which may be forgotten for a long time at the back corner of my freezer. Usually, after I bought my salmon from the supermarket, I cut it into many smaller pieces and marinate them based on different recipes I want to cook. My favorite salmon recipe is grilled cajun salmon. I also love teriyaki salmon and baked salmon. Last but not least, if you live with other family members or roommates who also share the same food with you then it is ideal to buy in bulk.
The biggest disadvantage of buying in bulk is that you risk throwing leftover food away if it is spoiled before you could consume them. After I moved out of my parents’ house, more than once, I have thrown away a lot of food that I bought in a large quantity. This is definitely a waste of money since I just buy something only to throw it away later. To avoid wasting both your money and food, plan ahead on which ingredients you will need more than the others, then head to the grocery store and buy only what you really need.
Freeze Your Meal
Nowadays, the world is getting very convenient. However, this also makes us lazy. A lot of people buy their meals online or from the store to later find out that those prepared meals cost them a fortune. To prevent wasting too much money on packed meals, you can buy fresh ingredients from the store and prepare yourself some of your favorite dishes. In my case, I always plan ahead on what I want to eat. After I know what dishes I want, I buy enough ingredients and meal-prep on the weekends. I usually marinate the proteins and let them chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before freezing them. This way, no matter it is fish, meat, or shellfish, the proteins always soak up all the flavors. Last but not least, another type of food you can freeze to use later is leftover food. Most of the time, people throw away leftovers because they get bored of eating them. However, if you pack them up and freeze them right away, you can heat them up and use them later.
If you have not already, check your fridge to see if you have any leftovers that you want to put away. Freeze them immediately so you can eat them later.
